PRIMARY PURPOSE:

 

Perform skilled, independent work in the repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance of large air conditioning systems along with related systems and equipment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education/Certification:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to read and write and have communication skills necessary to converse with various types of persons
  • Must have and maintain certification required by the HVAC Department, i.e., refrigerant reclaim certification
  • Must maintain valid Texas drivers license and insurable driving record

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work
  • Thorough knowledge of the heating, refrigeration and air condition equipment
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions and to work from blueprints and sketches
  • Considerable skills in heating and correcting defects in heating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Experience:

  • Five years experience as HVAC Mechanic preferred

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

Maintenance and Repair

  1. Maintain all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment on assigned campuses along with peripheral related equipment (chillers, air handlers, fan coils, basic controls, dx units, related piping, and air compressors).
  2. Manage assigned work orders, maintaining material and labor costs applied to each job.
  3. Show accountability for supplies purchased or issued.
  4. Care for and maintain assigned vehicles and tools.
  5. Meet performance standards.
  6. Perform scheduled and emergency repairs and/or maintenance as directed.
  7. Always act in lead position unless accompanied by other designated Class I employee.

Safety

  1. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing. Operate equipment and use tools according to established safety procedures.
  2. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  3. Maintain tools and equipment; perform preventive maintenance as required.
  4. Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organized facility and work area.

Other

  1. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evening maintenance and/or adjusted hours, as assigned.
  2. Attendance is a requirement of this position.
  3. Carry out all duties in accordance with BISD Board of Education policies and administrative regulations.
  4. Maintain a high personal standard in the following areas: attitude, cooperation, dependability, judgment, initiative, self-improvement, and as a role model for students.
  5. Conduct oneself in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner in accordance with generally accepted community standards.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Vehicle, meters (electrical, temperature, flow), pressure gauges, hand tools, vacuum pump, refrigerant recovery unit, pipe threaders, torch and welding unit

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to distinguish basic colors for the purpose of electrical safety
  • Medium lifting and carrying with minimum floor to knuckle lift of 75 lbs
  • Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, and some shoveling
  • Frequent walking, climbing stairs/ladders/scaffolding, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching
  • Operation of a motor vehicle

Environmental Demands

  • Occasional prolonged or irregular hours of work
  • Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces
  • Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures; excessive humidity and dampness
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, and electrical hazards
  • Exposure to a small amount of fumes from silicone, glues, and adhesives
  • Exposure to dust, smoke, gas, solvents, grease, and oil
  • Work with ladders, scaffolds, and personnel lifts
  • Work around machinery with moving parts; work around moving objects and vehicles
  • May work alone
  • Frequent districtwide travel
